The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was established in the old port town
of Leith in Edinburgh in 1983. It first started when Phillip Hills formed
a syndicate with some of his friends and shared the cask which they bought
from the Speyside distillery(No.1). The main theme of SMWS is to love whisky
which is the most fabulous spirit in the world and to share it, taste it
and mostly enjoy it. People who approve this are always welcome to SMWS.
The Edinburgh Headquarter is in the building called the Vaults which was
a wine storehouse in the 14th century. There is a lounge for the members,
tasting room and four types of flats. The young SMWS was just small assembly
of whisky lovers, but as the people evaluates malt whisky many people from
all over the world have become members of this society. Whisky lovers increased
in Japan, which made possible the birth of the Japanese branch in 1993.
Now, therefre 14 branch offices in the world including USA, Switzerland,
Netherlands, Italy etc. and more than 30,000 members. |
